Rodriguez family

Bolivia's coffee exports have fallen by up to 70% in the last 10 years. The Rodriguez family's Agricafe project is advocating a return to growing coffee instead of coca.

Producer

Mr. Pedro Rodriguez has been in the coffee world for over 35 years and is one of the first pioneers of specialty coffee in Bolivia. He founded Agricafe in 1986, when he was primarily involved in the purchase and export of green coffee. When he saw how coffee production in Bolivia was massively declining, he decided to invest in his own farms in 2010. Agricafe is run together with his children Daniela and Pedro Pablo. They employ 35 permanent employees and two hundred pickers during the harvest. These are professional pickers who harvest apricots, grapes, coffee, etc. depending on the season...

They have invested in popular varieties, modern equipment and innovation in coffee processing. Sustainability is not just an empty term here, but a real part of their philosophy. It is reflected in the economic, ecological and social levels.

What took our breath away was the precision and organization. The arrival of a container of coffee from Agricafe to our roastery is a joy. Each individual lot has a different color of bags or boxes, a tag with all the information, and will receive a table with the exact position of the bags in the container in advance. Same principles of precision apply to their processing stations and the whole organization.

Farms and beneficios

Currently, the family-owned company Agricafe has 12 of its own farms, which fall under their 2 processing plants, Buena Vista and El Fuerte. The most famous farms include Alasitas, Trapiche, Floripondio and La Linda. They place great emphasis on organic coffee farming. They grow popular varieties such as Geisha, Java, Caturra and Kenyan SL28. In addition to the coffee itself, they also produce dried coffee flowers, which you could taste if you are our subscribers.

Buena Vista
This processing plant is located in Caranavi, north of La Paz. It is Agricafe's main facility, where most of the coffee from its 8 own farms is processed, from farmers from the Sol De La Mañana project and from other farmers from the surrounding area who do not have their own facilities. The altitude of the farms located here varies between 1400 and 1650 m above sea level.

El Fuerte
This is a smaller plant in the Samaipata area southwest of the city of Santa Cruz. At El Fuerte, coffee is processed mainly from 4 nearby own farms, such as our most popular farm, Floripondio.

La Luna / The Moon
There is a facility in the city of La Paz, where all coffee is transported and prepared for export. This is the highest processing plant in the world (approx. 4000 m above sea level).

Processing

The precision of the Rodriguez family is fully evident in the processing of coffee. In the portfolio you will find fresh washed coffees, sweet coffees processed using the honey method or funky naturals. The natural processing is quite unique, called Coco Natural.

This is a method that Agricafe created together with Brazilian expert Flavio Borem. In this method, the cherries are first dried on African beds for 5 days in direct sunlight and then in special drying containers at a maximum temperature of 40°C for 20 days. These open containers are a world rarity. The heat comes from gas burners and the coffee is regularly raked manually. The flavor profile then depends mainly on the number of cherries in the container and the frequency of raking.

In addition to the classic African beds, Agricafe also has sophisticated facilities with UV shielding and adjustable air flow for drying coffee. Probes for measuring the temperature of the cherries are a matter of course.
