Producer

Luis Miranda was born and raised in Nicaragua on a small family farm growing staple crops for his livelihood. It was there that his relationship with the land, fieldwork, and agriculture as a way of life began. He later earned a degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State University. He could have stayed in the private sector in California, but he chose a different path, returning to agriculture and gradually to coffee.

Before entering the world of specialty coffee, he founded and ran Wholeness Farm, an organic vegetable farm in Northern California. His experience directly managing a farm-to-table agricultural project gave him the practical foundation that is still evident in his work today: an emphasis on the land, planning, detail, transparency, and economic sustainability.

Luis first came to specialty coffee around 2012 in San Francisco, where he began regularly visiting the then rapidly growing fine coffee scene. In coffee, he found a connection between agriculture, taste, relationships, and global community. In 2015, he went to Panama, where he co-founded a farm and developed his own philosophy of cultivation: environmental friendliness, social responsibility, long-term customer relationships, technological innovation and high quality standards.

In 2022, after an unexpected personal change, he returned to Nicaragua. Within a few months, he found land suitable for coffee and founded Finca Massif. He bought two small farms – one completely unproductive and the other long-neglected, with low yields. Instead of a quick commercial solution, he decided on a radical renovation: he removed most of the original coffee trees and began building a new project focused on rare and flavorful varieties.

Farm

Finca Massif is not one classic farm, but a project built on two distinct sites in Nicaragua. The first is located in the Macizo de Peñas Blancas area of Matagalpa, at an altitude of 1,250-1,400 m above sea level. The second is located in the Cordillera Dipilto-Jalapa Nature Reserve in the municipality of Mozonte, Nueva Segovia, at an altitude of 1,400-1,650 m above sea level.

The two sites have different microclimates, soils and agronomic conditions. Matagalpa offers a wetter mountain environment, distinctive vegetation and stable conditions for slower ripening. Nueva Segovia offers higher altitudes, cooler nights and a different type of structure in the cup. It is the combination of these two locations that gives Finca Massif a wide range of scope for working with varieties and processing.

Luis' goal is clear: to build a farm focused on exceptional genetic material. In addition to well-known varieties such as Geisha, Pacamara, SL28, Laurina, Sidra and Maragogype, he also plants three indigenous Ethiopian varieties, which he refers to as Amaro, Bonga and Metu. These varieties form the long-term potential of Finca Massif – not necessarily in volume, but in the diversity, complexity and uniqueness of future lots.

Processing

Luis uses both the washed processing method with water fermentation, the classic dry processing method, and anaerobic fermentation in closed bags on his farms. Drying takes place on African beds and then in the shaded concrete patios of the Beneficio Las Segovias processing plant, where Luis works as a quality controller.
